G: Gargoyle

Here's the latest entry in my A-Z Challenge. My theme? "Golden Age Comic Book Characters with the Same Name As Modern-Day Characters."

The Gargoyle first appeared in Captain Aero #4, from Holyoke Comics, 1942. He was Dan Collins, described as a "playboy fashion plate." No powers. Just guns!

Today's Gargoyle is published by Marvel Comics. He was a transformed, elderly human named Isaac Christians, who first appeared in The Defenders #94, 1981.

Thanks for your time.

    1. A friend of mine was a huge fan of the cartoon. I saw a few episodes and thought it was pretty good.

  3. Isn't there also an X-men related character who looks like a gargoyle but is not named a gargoyle?... I vaguely remember something like that.

  5. i have not come across this character before. it's interesting how they morph characters over time. i wonder if someone was filtering through the archives of characters and saw the original and thought, "how cool!" and decided to make his own verison of it.

    1. It's very possible, with most if not all of my A to Z examples.

  7. I have a gargoyle in my yard. Of the two pictures here, I believe the second one can better keep the squirrels away.

  8. With the older Gargoyle, it just doesn't seem right that a character with that name wouldn't get any powers. Why does a gargoyle need a gun? Just from he pictures, I like the more modern one.

    1. I guess the first one thought his disguise made him sufficiently ugly. :)
